I’m sending this message because of my concern for patients and the communities served by Sauk Prairie Healthcare due to Anthem’s decision to exclude Sauk Prairie Healthcare from its provider network.
Anthem’s unwillingness to reach a contract agreement with Sauk Prairie Healthcare demonstrates that Anthem prioritizes shareholder profits over patients’ needs.
By removing Sauk Prairie Healthcare from its network, Anthem shows total disregard for the meaningful relationships between patients and their healthcare providers. It’s simply not enough to tell enrollees to choose another in-network provider. Anthem’s selfish and financially motivated decision is putting people through needless stress, especially those who are chronically ill or elderly.
Anthem has taken away patient access to local providers at a time when it’s extremely difficult to get appointments elsewhere. By limiting access, Anthem is cutting the supply of nearby providers to patients and thereby cheapening the value of its insurance plan for those who pay premiums.
While Anthem claims to be committed to protecting affordability for its members, the reality is that Anthem is burdening patients with the additional costs of traveling further for care, such as taking time off work, paying for additional childcare, gas, etc. It makes no sense that Anthem is willing to send patients to other health systems that may ultimately cost the health plan and the patient more than if Sauk Prairie Healthcare would have been able to remain in network.
I urge you to do what’s best for the members you serve and to bring Sauk Prairie Healthcare back into your provider network immediately.

Background:
Anthem chose to remove Sauk Prairie Healthcare from its provider network, effectively making it financially impossible for thousands of people to continue to see their provider of choice.
During contract negotiations, Sauk Prairie Healthcare proposed fair and reasonable rates which reflect the need to offer competitive wages and benefits to recruit and retain incredible team members who live in our communities.
Anthem is pointing the finger of blame at Sauk Prairie Healthcare, however while our offer decreased multiple times over the last two months of negotiations, Anthem’s offer did not change.
Forcing patients to find new providers demonstrates Anthem’s lack of empathy for the needless stress they are causing patients and disregard for patients’ well-being.
